] "My sister's band, Pel Mel, supported them on tour and played before them (not sure if it was every gig but certainly in Sydney and Melbourne.) I don't think there was another support band except JCC. ) Blue Monday (full), Cries & Whispers, The Village, Thieves Like Us, 586, Age Of Consent, Everything's Gone Green "Sadly, and i think it might have been Thieves like us on top of the pops or something, but Barnard wore a leather motorbike jacket, and at the gig after this, The Royal Festival Hall, so did 3/4 of the audience !!!
The tour was promoted by Ken West and Vivien Lees ? Ken has a great history managing bands like The Laughing Clowns (with ex- Saint Ed Kuepper) and Pel Mel and also promoting tours of bands like The Birthday Party." I certainly saw the concerts at the Capitol, Manly Vale and Selinas. The volume seemed to double in the middle of "In a Lonely Place" and the band had enough sound gear for a space twice as big as the cramped 688. It appeared to be a gig in remembrance of IC who died four years earlier.
It was a giant room, very high, but with good sound. The lights came on and the roadies were packing away the gear.
I remember a cracking Blue Monday that night."Your Silent Face, Dreams Never End, Chosen Time, Hurt In A Lonely Place, Ultraviolence, The Village, Denial, Blue Monday (encore) Temptation, Lonesome Tonight, Sister Ray Soundcheck includes The Village, Denial, Blue Monday, Hurt We All Stand, Leave Me Alone, Denial, The Village, Temptation, Confusion, In A Lonely Place, Age Of Consent, Blue Monday, Everything's Gone Green, Ceremony Soundcheck includes We All Stand, Confusion, The Him[ "Only some of us at Atlanta's 688 club knew the significance of the evening. after Ian Curtis' suicide had halted Joy Division's scheduled US tour. Someone must have said something out of line because one roadie jumps down from the stage chasing a guy in the audience arms and fists all over the place quickly followed by another roadie to make sure of it.
I saw countless bands there including Echo & Bunnymen in November 1981 (again I think I was there with Pel Mel supporting), also The Cure in 1981. The encore included Decades and Love will ..., it was made clear to the audience that it wasn't for them but for a friend who died some years ago." ][ "New Order didn't do an encore although the crowd were screaming.
"The concert was organised by FINAL SOLUTION and coaches were due to leave Speakers Corner, Marble Arch, London at 4.30pm. To this day I do not know where we were going but the rumour was a castle in Wales and it was cancelled because the grounds were flooded.
I would be grateful if anyone could shed some light on this". Peter Munnery heard rumours that the secret venue was actually a castle in Kent.
A moot point really, since the concert was cancelled, but thanks go out to both of you for the info.
explains everything with this: "The mystery venue was not in Wales. The weather was not good that day, very rainy, and by the time we got there the road crew had set up the stage - imagine a square and the stage would have been across one corner, but their opinion was that due to the general wetness and the rain driving into the equipment it would not be safe to play.It is a standing room venue and was totally sold-out.
